Filles de la Sagesse – Maison Acceuil Cafeteria

Located at 424 Montreal Road in Ottawa, the national headquarters of the Order, the project is a complete renovation to the dining room, and servery within the basements of the original 185 year old building and an adjacent 85 year old addition. Although the space is officially a dining room the Sisters use it as a multi-purpose space for both informal and formal gatherings. Here they eat, sing, give lectures, have meetings, entertain visitors, and enjoy quiet time alone or with family and friends.   The Nuns lead a simple life and tasked us with creating an open, inviting, modern space that reflects this choice. The Sisters are keen students of their history and were very pleased with our suggestion to uncover and restore the original stone and brick structure and to repair the terrazzo dining room floor. Required structural interventions were minimal and restrained in order to highlight features of the original building. All mechanical and electrical building systems were redesigned to provide better comfort and to bring the space to current building code standards. Construction materials and finishes selected reflected the Sisters’ values of simplicity, strength and durability.
